When you think of fruits rich in vitamin C, it reminds you of citrus fruits, doesn’t it? But what if I tell you that kiwi is richer in vitamin C than citrus fruits?! Yes, interesting fact! Now go and grab the kiwis that are soft enough to yield slightly when you squeeze them, but avoid those that are mushy. Make sure you are avoiding any extra firm kiwis.
Ingredients
- one large handful of spinach (30-40g)
- 1 kiwi
- 1 large green apple
- 1 lime
Instructions
- Wash all the ingredients. Make sure there is no mud stuck on the spinach leaves.
- No need to peel the kiwi. Slice it if needed
- Core and chop the apple into pieces that fit the juicer.
- Peel the lime and cut it in half.
- Put all the ingredients in the juicer and wait until everything is juiced.
Note: This recipe yields only one glass of juice. Raise the quantity if you want more.
Nutritional value and immune-boosting properties
Kiwi
This vibrant fruit delivers a surge of immune-boosting nutrients with every bite! Kiwis are a superior source of vitamin C. These tart-sweet fruits contain approximately 230% of RDI of vitamin C. We’re aware that optimal vitamin C levels are critical for immune function, so it is great to know that consuming a kiwi gives almost three times more vitamin C than an orange. Kiwis are also rich in other antioxidants, including vitamin E. That’s why their consumption helps protect the body from inflammation and disease.
According to a study done by the American Chemical Society, the total antioxidant capacity of kiwifruit is higher than that of apple, grapefruit, and pear but less than that of strawberry. These results suggest that kiwi has a high capacity to neutralize free radicals and protect our cells from oxidative damage.
Spinach
Spinach is a nutrient-dense leafy green that enhances immune health due to its high levels of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as antioxidants like flavonoids and carotenoids. These nutrients help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, while the fibers in spinach support gut health – which is crucial for a strong immune system. Additionally, its iron content aids in oxygen transport, further contributing to overall vitality.
Based on the results of agricultural research services of Food Data Central of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a 100g serving of spinach contains 28.1mg of vitamin C, 34% of a person’s RDI. Vitamin C is a top immune-boosting vitamin!
Apple
Apples are rich in vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system by promoting the production of white blood cells. They also contain antioxidants, such as flavonoids, that help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. The dietary fiber in apples supports gut health, fostering a balanced microbiome essential for immune function. Additionally, their hydration and low-calorie content make apples a refreshing and nutritious choice for boosting overall health.
Lime
As part of the citrus fruits group, limes contain a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support the immune system’s function. For example, vitamin C and folate, both of which benefit the gut’s protective lining. Folate or vitamin B9 is essential for the function of T-cells – which prevent excessive or overactive immune responses. On the other hand, vitamin C modulates immunity by anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune response modulation mechanisms. The high levels of vitamin C also help protect against infection and speed up the body’s healing process.
Remember to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new dietary regimen or adding new ingredients to your juices, as individual nutritional needs and responses to specific ingredients can vary.
